Orphanage Update: October, 2015

There is always an unparalleled joy that one experiences when surrounded with children beaming with happiness. Just ask the Perksters, who visited Ashanilaya on the 18th of this month. Apart from infectious smiles, the team was greeted by the children with roses and a welcome song on Jesus Christ.

The team had the pleasure of watching the children in their drama element, in the form of a musical skit called “Peanuts”, which wittily highlighted the ill-effects of junk food. Then came everyone’s favorite event, dancing! The kids danced to various numbers with renewed vigor, and then gave way to watch Rajkumar Kaniki bring out some fancy moves. The kids ended up joining him, and in the process, pulling every other Perkster on to the stage! One sweet little boy, Vijay, became a pro at aping every move Rajkumar made, and gave him a run for his money!

Now, what is a get-together without some exciting games? Everyone, including the staff, was divided into four teams, and were made to play a game which involved not letting a ball fall out of three pipes. It wasn’t as simple as it sounds, and took some serious teamwork to achieve victory. The winners will testify.

Lunch time saw everything from noodles, veg chilli and chicken roll, to ice cream being devoured mirthfully; but not before a little prayer. The team’s visit to Ashanilaya ended with a sense of fulfilment and delight. The children were presented with story books, games, puzzles, and chocolates. What surprised us is that fact that the kids remembered each and every one of our names!

A memorable visit, indeed!

Orphanage Update: September, 2015

At present, Ashanilaya houses 20 kids including ten others who visit the orphanage each week from Tamil Nadu.

On 12th September, 2015, Vamsee, Hemavathi, Libin, Manu, Deepak, Giridhar and Goutham visited Ashanilaya and were welcomed by the kids with roses. A humbling experience indeed! The welcome speech was given by one of the caretakers, post which, the kids introduced and spoke a little bit about themselves. Art, in many forms, has always been second nature to the kids, and we witnessed it this time around as well. There were song and dance performances to popular Bollywood and Tamil hits, and also a traditional Kannada folk dance. This was followed by lunch from ChicKing and ice-creams for dessert!

Ashanilaya has a few computers currently being used by college-going girls. To further nourish modernisation, we have donated 2 Samsung laptops and promised IT-related assistance as well. Founder and Director of the orphanage, Dr. John Lourdes Fernandes, thanked the company from the bottom of his heart for the continued contribution.

Orphanage Update: February/March 2014

There are currently 32 children living at Ashanilaya and after May, that number will increase to more than 50 children! All of the new children are orphans–with either no parents at all or single parents that are unable to take care of them.

10 children from the Egipura Slum come to Ashanilaya daily–where they receive after-school tuition and supplementary nutrition.

Health & Hygiene:

At Ashanilaya, they have a solar water heating system and the children are able to have hot water for their daily baths. Purified water is regularly given to the children for drinking purposes.

Events & Celebrations:

Children went to the nearby Sri Rama Temple during the day. They prayed there and returned to the orphanage. The children enjoyed a school holiday.  It is a common practice in many villages in India for women to join together and spend the whole night singing bhajans. Some of our women staff from the villages did that, but our girls in Ashanilaya preferred to watch from Ashanilaya terrace the cultural program that was put up at the NGV Club beyond our compound wall. They enjoyed the show free of cost as there were some famous bollywood actresses too.

Participation in School Cultural Program:

Sulochana and Poongody had a Cultural Day in their School. They dressed in saris and attended the Program. This is the first time in their life that they were wearing saris and were very excited.

Final Exams:

All the children have started their final exams. Their finals will be over on March 25. After finals are over, the children will enjoy a long summer vacation.
